Hà Giang is the province at the very top of Vietnam, on the border with China. The "loop" is the road that climbs north from Hà Giang city through Quản Bạ and Yên Minh to Đồng Văn, crosses the Mã Pí Lèng pass to Mèo Vạc, then comes back south. Most guests ask us the same thing first: how long should we give it?
The short answer
- 3 days from Hà Giang city is the minimum to drive the loop without rushing every stop.
- 4 to 5 days is what we suggest for most travellers. It adds a market morning and a night with a family.
- Add 2 travel days if you start and end in Hanoi. The road between Hanoi and Hà Giang city takes most of a day each way.
Three days: the main road only
Day one goes from Hà Giang city over Quản Bạ Heaven's Gate to Yên Minh. Day two is the big one: Đồng Văn old quarter, then the Mã Pí Lèng pass and the view down to the Nho Quế River, ending in Mèo Vạc. Day three brings you back south through Du Già or the faster main road.
It works, but you will spend a lot of each day in the car and arrive at the best viewpoints at whatever time the schedule allows, not when the light is good.

Five days: time for markets and a homestay
Two extra days change the trip more than the number suggests. You can:
- Time your route for a Sunday market in Đồng Văn or Mèo Vạc, where Hmong, Lô Lô and Giáy families come in from the villages.
- Take the boat on the Nho Quế River and walk part of the pass instead of only stopping at the top.
- Spend a night in a family homestay, with dinner cooked at home.
- Keep a buffer for fog or rain, which can close the view on the pass for a morning.
Planner's tip: if you can only move one thing, move your dates so that you are in Đồng Văn or Mèo Vạc on a Sunday morning.
When to go
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| March to May | Mild, plum and peach blossom early in the season, clear days. |
| June to August | Green and warm, with heavy showers. Roads can be slow after storms. |
| September to early October | Rice harvest in the terraced valleys, often the most photographed weeks. |
| Late October to November | Pink buckwheat flowers on the plateau, cool and mostly dry. |
| December to February | Cold nights, sometimes near freezing. Bring warm layers. |
Getting there from Hanoi
There is no airport in Hà Giang. You go by road, either with a private car and driver or on a sleeper bus. With a private car you can stop for lunch and leave when it suits you, and the same driver stays with you for the whole loop.
If you have the time, it is worth adding Cao Bằng and the Bản Giốc waterfall on the way back. That turns the loop into a full week in the far north.
How we run it
Our Hà Giang and Cao Bằng Loop is 8 days from Hanoi with a private car, driver and English-speaking guide. Two of the nights are at Pà Vi Stone House, a Hmong family home that is one of our local partners. We can shorten it, add rest days or swap hotels before you book.
